Manga exhibit

THE international traveling exhibition Manga Hokusai Manga: Approaching the Master’s Compendium from the Perspective of Contemporary Comics opens on June 17 and runs until July 28 at the Ateneo Art Gallery (AAG). The exhibit — a project of AAG, The Japan Foundation, Manila and The Embassy of Japan — introduces the similarities and differences between modern Japanese manga, which now enjoys global popularity, and Katsushika Hokusai’s manga. The exhibit includes six images of Hokusai from 1970’s manga and seven original works made by contemporary manga artists specifically for this exhibition. The exhibit will feature a reading corner, with manga from the library of The Japan Foundation, Manila.

Bar tour

Father, daughter concert

CELEBRATE Father’s Day with the special performance of the father-daughter tandem of Hajji and Rachel Alejandro live at Winford Hotel and Casino’s (WHC) Hippodrome Bar and Lounge on June 17, at 8 p.m. The two will perform numerous OPM hits between them which span from the 1970s to the new millennium. Known as the “Kilabot ng mga Kolehiyala” during the ’70s, Hajji Alejandro remains as one of the pillars of OPM, best known for his hits “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika,” “Panakip Butas,” and “Nakapagtataka” among others. Rachel followed in her father’s footsteps pursuing a career in entertainment earning theater credits when she was eight, dabbling in TV and film, and being an award-winning platinum recording artist. Among her notable singles include “Mr. Kupido,” “Babalik-balikan,” and “Paalam Na.” The concert is open to all guests 21 years old and above with free admission. Lecture on audience growth

A FREE master class for independent filmmakers, producers, and media practitioners will be conducted by award-winning film director Mark Meily who will talk about “How to Grow Your Audience.” It will be held on June 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the School of Design and Arts Cinema of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB). Mr. Meily is the Chairman of the college’s Film Program. A recipient of the Best Director Award at the Metro Manila Film Festival for his movies Crying Ladies and Baler, his films have been presented at film festivals in Brussels, Busan, Deauville, Fukuoka, Gothenborg, Honolulu, Marrakech, Montreal, and Seattle. He has likewise directed marketing and promotional campaigns for Proctor & Gamble, Coca-Cola, DocuSign and FICO. Register early, for admission to this lecture is limited.
